During President Trump’s second term, the United States has reevaluated its commitment to the rules-based trading system it helped establish after World War II, upending existing trade commitments in an effort to reshape trade flows and address a persistent U.S. trade deficit. In this session, we will discuss the impact this strategy has had on trade relations with Latin America, where the United States has more free trade agreements than any other region, first and foremost the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, negotiated in President Trump’s first term. Mexico and Canada are Nebraska’s #1 and #2 export markets, representing $3.4 billion in exports, illustrating the critical importance of hemispheric trade to Nebraska and the Midwest.
