The MITA-Midwest International Trade Association hosted its annual World Trade Conference on May 14, 2026, in Omaha. “Global Trade at a Crossroads: Security, Strategy and the Midwest Advantage,” brought together business leaders, government officials, academics, and trade professionals for a day of in depth conversation surrounding the fast changing global economic environment. Attendees engaged in discussions about supply chain resilience, tariff uncertainty, geopolitical pressures, agricultural competitiveness, and the growing influence of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence on the future of trade.

The conference featured an impressive lineup of speakers who offered insights from across the global trade ecosystem. Beth Richardson, Consul General of Canada in Minneapolis, explored ways Nebraska and Canada can strengthen economic ties and mitigate regional supply chain risks. Ambassador Darci Vetter, Sower Strategies, and Kellie Meiman Hock, McLarty Associates, examined the unsettled nature of U.S. trade policy and the broader implications for North American market stability. Nebraska Policy Advisor Cicely Batie provided an update on the state’s agricultural trade efforts and the administration’s ongoing international outreach. Stephen Zambo, Founder and CEO, The AGL Group, shared real world perspectives on the logistical pressures facing global shippers, from vessel constraints to tightening geopolitical flashpoints. Erin Saxby (Crowley), Vice President of Enterprise Data & AI, FNBO, offered practical guidance for companies looking to responsibly adopt and scale generative AI within their trade operations. Caleb Hall, Scarbrough Global, provided an update on Section 232 and 122 tariffs, IEEPA refunds and procedures to file CAPE declarations through the ACE portal.

Panel discussions included Omaha/Lincoln chamber leaders on domestic regulatory trends, economic development priorities, and the Midwest’s competitive position in the global marketplace. Academic experts from the University of Nebraska at Omaha gave perspectives on how shifting U.S.–China–Taiwan dynamics are reshaping global commerce, technology innovation, and supply chain strategy.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the MITA Global Trade Award, which this year honored FNBO—recognized not only for their leadership in financial services supporting international business, but also for their forward thinking approach to responsible AI.

The conference concluded with a well attended networking reception, with special guests CITCA – Chicago International Trade Commissioners’ Association, sponsored by FNBO, providing attendees the opportunity to continue conversations and build new partnerships. Overall, the 2026 World Trade Conference delivered timely insights, meaningful dialogue, and a clear look at the challenges and opportunities facing the Midwest as global trade continues to evolve.
